December Volunteer of the Month: Shannon Walters
Since moving to Santa Clarita, Shannon Walters has been an active local volunteer, and she’s consistently joined us for canvasses and other volunteer opportunities! This is what Shannon had to say about why she volunteers:
“I moved to Valencia from Arizona in August. My educational background is in counseling and I’m a consultant for healthcare providers and health plans. My son is a sophomore at California State University, Northridge.
I was motivated to volunteer on behalf of Democrats leading up to and following the 2016 election when Trumpism was taking hold in my district. At the time, I lived in a very Republican district in Arizona and we faced uphill battles in local and national campaigns. I became a precinct committee member for my neighborhood. While our candidates didn’t always win, we were successful in increasing voter registration and voter turnout amongst Democrats in our district.
The issues most important to me include gun violence prevention, LGBTQ rights, and learning more about and combatting systemic racism. I’ve really enjoyed canvassing and postcarding with the SCV Democrats and look forward to helping flip seats from red to blue in the Santa Clarita Valley!”
